About Grant Making

Grants currently closed – please come back 20th November 2025

Grassroots organisations are creating solutions towards climate adaptation and building their own resilience, however, these are under funded.

The Africa Climate Justice Movement (ACJM) is mobilizing resources to significantly expand what is available for grassroots environmental and climate justice movements across the continent. We believe that those on the frontlines ; women, girls, and local communities are best positioned to create solutions rooted in justice and equity. .

Our grant making is more than funding: it is solidarity. We put resources directly into the hands of activists and grassroots actors who carry bold visions, practice innovative strategies, and take daring action to transform their realities. These grants support work advancing justice, solidarity, equity, and collective care values at the heart of our movement.

We prioritize flexible, trust-based support that allows local groups to set their own agendas, respond to crises, and sustain their organizing. ACJM strengthens the long-term power of communities to advocate for their rights, protect ecosystems, and build feminist alternatives to build their resilience to the climate crisis.

Our grant making is based on a set of principles that are rooted in :

Trust Based

  • We believe those closest to the problem are also closest to the solution.
  • The committee does not impose rigid criteria; instead, it listens deeply to applicants’ visions and trusts their strategies.
  • Accountability is mutual, rooted in relationship and solidarity, not bureaucracy

Participation and Inclusion

  • Committee membership reflects the diversity of the movement, geography, gender, generation, and area of expertise.
  • Decision-making is collaborative, with each voice valued equally, regardless of formal position or status.
  • Grassroots leaders, especially women and youth, are centered in shaping decisions.

Transparency and learning

  • Criteria, processes, and decisions are openly communicated to applicants and the wider movement.
  • Feedback is constructive, supportive, and designed to strengthen groups whether or not they receive funding.
  • Each funding cycle includes reflection to improve inclusivity, fairness, and impact.

Since we launched our grantmaking in 2022, we have:

    • Criteria, processes, and decisions are openly communicated to applicants and the wider movement.
