Role of Members
The Grant Review Committee ensures that the Africa Climate Justice Movement’s resources are stewarded in line with our values of justice, equity, solidarity, care, and collective leadership. Its role is not to police or gatekeep but to facilitate fair, transparent, and movement-rooted decision-making about where and how grants are allocated.
Structure and committee membership
- Composition: A balanced mix of grassroots leaders, activists, thematic experts, and movement representatives.
- Rotation: Membership rotates every year to avoid concentration of power and to allow wider participation.
- Role of Members
- Review applications with care and fairness.
- Engage in collective deliberation, not just individual scoring
- Bring forward perspective from their constituences while upholding ACJM‘s values
Decision Making Process
The small sub-committee checks for eligibility and completeness of applications.
- Each application is reviewed by multiple committee members to ensure fairness.
- Reviews consider alignment with ACJM’s principles, boldness of vision, and potential for impact—rather than size, formality, or prior access to resources.
- Committee members meet (virtually or in person) to discuss applications.
- Consensus is sought first; where consensus is not possible, majority agreement is used but dissenting views are documented.
- Approved grants are announced transparently to applicants and the movement.
- Unsuccessful applicants receive supportive feedback and are encouraged to stay engaged for future opportunities.

Accountability and Care
Committee members are committed to upholding the highest standards of confidentiality, integrity, and compassion in every discussion and decision. All deliberations are conducted with respect and transparency, ensuring that outcomes reflect both ethical responsibility and collective care. To strengthen institutional memory and foster trust, every decision is carefully documented and shared with relevant stakeholders. Members are also supported through continuous capacity-building opportunities and dedicated reflective spaces, enabling them to engage thoughtfully and ensure that each process remains deeply grounded in shared values and principles.
