The Movement was conceived in 2022 and the journey commenced with a convening in Kinshasa in April 2023, which established the foundation for a broader convergence that emphasised the significance of Pan-African feminist movement focusing on women’s concerns, perspectives and interest in advocating for gender, environmental and climate justice. This was followed by the convening in Arusha in July 2023, which defined the structure, collective vision, mapping of actors and the agreement to appropriately position the Movement.

Global Fund for Women is supporting the Movement, and its actors of African eco-feminists and women-led grassroot organisations by adopting a movement-led approach (MLA) to promote a collective voice and approach to identification of needs and solutions to climate challenges.
The approach increases access to resources and capacity building/strengthening to movement actors, and collective learning to achieve their goals and contribute to shifting power to the actors for transformation within the climate arena.
